The Synergy Model of substance abuse treatment incorporates several types of intervention:

Individual clinical counseling including relapse prevention instruction and "12-step" group counseling programs of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics/Cocaine Anonymous.

Therapeutic work- a program that places residents in a full-time job in order to increase their job skills, instill a greater sense of work ethic and personal responsibility, and provide a limited, structured, social interaction with the broader community via the business environment in which they work.

Personal development-through educational achievement such as GED preparation classes, self-esteem and anger management counseling, and life skills.

Phase I: Intensive Treatment Phase – the first 4 to 6 weeks. During a resident’s initial phase of treatment (first 30-45 days, depending on the client’s personal progress), they receive intensive treatment services in order to individualize treatment goals. Each resident is assigned a counselor who conducts their individual counseling sessions.

In addition to these individual sessions, Synergy conducts group treatment classes including:

  • AA / 12 Steps / 12 Traditions Study
  • Homework / Study Hall / Big Book Study
  • Anger Management / Journaling
  • Health/Life Skills / Recreation
  • Relapse Prevention / Orientation
  • Spiritual Issues / Meditation / Process Group
  • G.E.D. / A.B.E. / Family Issues
  • Cognitive Restructuring / House Meeting

Phase II: The Work Therapy Phase – final 10+ months

Following successful completion of the intensive treatment phase, individuals enter into the second phase of treatment (next 10+ months) and begin integrating vocational rehabilitation services into their substance abuse treatment program. Residents are taken to and from job sites during the day, returning to Synergy in the evening for a continuation of their treatment through a combination of classes.

Classes included in the Work Therapy Phase:

  • AA/12 Steps/12 Traditions Study
  • 12 and 12
  • Big Book Study
  • G.E.D./A.B.E.
  • Relapse Prevention
  • Dinner Club (2 Step Presentations)
  • Orientation
  • Recreation
  • Men’s Group
  • House Meeting
  • Women’s Group
  • Homework/Study Hall
  • Cognitive Restructuring
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Anger Management
  • Process Group
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Inside Speaker Meetings
  • Creative Quiet Time
  • Spiritual Issues/Meditation
  • Pass/Recovery Plan Group

Personal development of Synergy’s residents is also enhanced by instruction and guidance in relapse prevention, self-esteem, nutrition, personal hygiene, physical health, HIV/AIDS awareness, sexual abuse counseling, and other services that the resident and counselor determine would be of benefit.

Many of Synergy’s residents are under-educated and have minimal employment skills. Often with no experience in a professional workplace, Synergy residents have the opportunity to improve their work ethic and learn a diverse range of job skills by working in one of Synergy’s owned and operated businesses or in a community job with a partnering business.

The work therapy component (in exchange for their room, board, and treatment) allows Synergy to answer the need for increased self-sufficiency among social-service agencies by producing an ongoing stream of earned income. Program income (the money residents earned) produced approximately 45% of the program’s total treatment expenses. Additional funding comes from grants and contributions.

Synergy’s Transitional Living Center is a transitional housing facility for adult male graduates of substance abuse treatment programs who need access to affordable housing and regular recovery services. An on-site Case Manager helps residents find employment and access mainstream resources. Additionally, the Case Manager helps residents repair poor credit history, address legal or medical problems and learn financial responsibility. This facility has 15 beds available. Residents typically stay between 1 and 2 years or until they are able to obtain permanent housing.

Residential DUI Program Synergy offers a 28 day residential treatment program for DUI offenders. Many participants are second time offenders with no insurance or access to other intensive substance abuse treatment. Previously sentenced to 45 days in jail, individuals may now spend 17 days in jail and the remaining 28 days in a residential treatment setting. The University of Memphis has been tracking the success rate of DUI offenders who spent 28 days in residential treatment as opposed to spending the entire time in jail. Their research suggests that with the treatment component, there is a 60% reduction in the rate of recidivism. A program for repeat DUI offenders is exciting for not only Synergy but for our community as a whole.
