Personal
development of Synergy’s
residents
is also enhanced by instruction
and guidance in relapse
prevention, self-esteem,
nutrition, personal hygiene,
physical health, HIV/AIDS
awareness, sexual abuse
counseling, and other
services that the resident
and counselor determine
would be of benefit.
Many
of Synergy’s residents
are under-educated and
have minimal employment
skills. Often with no
experience in a professional
workplace, Synergy residents
have the opportunity to
improve their work ethic
and learn a diverse range
of job skills by working
in one of Synergy’s
owned and operated businesses
or in a community job
with a partnering business.
The
work therapy component
(in exchange for their
room, board, and treatment)
allows Synergy to answer
the need for increased
self-sufficiency among
social-service agencies
by producing an ongoing
stream of earned income.
Program income (the money
residents earned) produced
approximately 45% of the
program’s total
treatment expenses. Additional
funding comes from grants
and contributions.
Synergy’s
Transitional Living Center
is a transitional housing
facility for adult male
graduates of substance
abuse treatment programs
who need access to affordable
housing and regular recovery
services. An on-site Case
Manager helps residents
find employment and access
mainstream resources.
Additionally, the Case
Manager helps residents
repair poor credit history,
address legal or medical
problems and learn financial
responsibility. This facility
has 15 beds available.
Residents typically stay
between 1 and 2 years
or until they are able
to obtain permanent housing.
Residential
DUI Program
Synergy offers a 28 day
residential treatment
program for DUI offenders.
Many participants are
second time offenders
with no insurance or access
to other intensive substance
abuse treatment. Previously
sentenced to 45 days in
jail, individuals may
now spend 17 days in jail
and the remaining 28 days
in a residential treatment
setting. The University
of Memphis has been tracking
the success rate of DUI
offenders who spent 28
days in residential treatment
as opposed to spending
the entire time in jail.
Their research suggests
that with the treatment
component, there is a
60% reduction in the rate
of recidivism. A program
for repeat DUI offenders
is exciting for not only
Synergy but for our community
as a whole.
